1st Balzan Workshop

Comparing Europe's Reconstructions

28 October 2005, Birkbeck College, London

This workshop launches an exciting series of meetings and research projects held under the auspices of the Balzan Project. The Balzan Project, which was established by Professor Eric Hobsbawm, looks at Reconstruction in the Immediate Aftermath of War: a comparative study of Europe, 1945-1950. It is based in the School of History at Birkbeck College and directed by Dr David Feldman and Professor Mark Mazower.

This first workshop intends to set out a two-fold comparison: a geographical comparison of reconstruction across all Europe, and a temporal comparison of reconstruction in the aftermath of the two world wars. The morning session will examine economic and social reconstruction in 1918/1945, while the afternoon session will look at 1945 and problems of reconstruction in both Eastern and Western Europe.
