Jessica Reinisch completed a project on public health in Germany under Allied occupation. The research examined public health work and the reconstruction of the public health system in the four German occupation zones after 1945. Public health was far from a purely medical affair, and the research demonstrates the ways in which the character and scope of health work in each zone was shaped by whole series of administrative, political and economic problems. In fact, prospering health was understood, by the Allies and Germans alike, to be central to a German revival.

As part of the Balzan Project, Jessica has also worked on refugees in post-war Europe. Her work explores issues surrounding the different refugee categories' entitlements to care and welfare in the German occupation zones. The research also seeks to place the refugee situation in Germany into the context of a much larger process of population upheaval. The project examines the role of UNRRA as an example of proto-United Nations thinking, and it will focus in part on UNRRA's involvement in the resettlement and transfer of refugees in Poland and Central/ Eastern Europe. One of the project's main aims is to explore a broader history of refugees and to shed light on the roles played by refugees and expellees in debates surrounding ideas of nationalism and internationalism.
