Elizabeth White's research has focused on Leningrad and its transition from a military to a civilian city in the aftermath of the war. This embraced topics such as the evacuation and subsequent return of the civilian population (particularly evacuated children and skilled workers), the re-establishment of family life and local policies for the care of orphans and homeless children, the attempt to re-impose a socialist order and the Soviet project of acculturation in the city, the rebuilding of the urban infrastructure (particularly housing) and the production of narratives of reconstruction, as well as everyday living conditions in Leningrad in the aftermath of war.
